Dendrochronology is the study of tree ring dating. By using specifically designed simulated tree cores, students develop basic knowledge of the principle of this technique. They will discover the important effects of climate on living things as they unravel secrets about the age and history of trees through the core samples. The climate of a particular year in the distant past can be estimated from a careful study of the annual rings of a tree. Using two different core samples, students 1) Determine the age of the trees; 2) Compare wet and dry years and attempt to relate them to chronological events in their life; 3) Attempt to establish the year when a piece of lumber was cut, and when it started growing; 4) Develop a better understanding of the tree ring dating principles.
