An interactive simulation and data base program that provides a hands-on lab to explore human karyotypes and the increasing number of genetic disorders that can be diagnosed through this technique. After learning how karyotypes are prepared and how to recognize the major categories of chromosome errors, students manipulate the data base to find specific information about a selected genetic disorder, type of chromosome error, or type of symptom. Another option challenges the student to inspect an unknown karyotype, determine whether it is normal or not, and then locate and identify any chromosomal anomalies. Includes lab activities.
