Human Karyotype Kit. Science Source. Last one!
Human chromosomes are analyzed through the process of karyotyping. Various human cells can be cultured in the laboratory; when a cell reaches the metaphase stage of cell division, further activity is arrested. Cells arrested in metaphase are microscopically photographed. The photos are enlarged to a workable size and a metaphase plate is formed. A karyotype is constructed by cutting out the photographed chromosomes and arranging them in a particular order for study.
The kit enables high school biology students to see the differences in human chromosomes, especially some of the chromosomal abnormalities which may occur in the human population. Sufficient materials are included to serve six students working singly, or six small groups of students. The investigation will occupy one to two class periods.
CONTENTS: 6 Karyotype trays, 6 Chromosome plate #1, 6 Chromosome plate #2, 6 Chromosome plate #3, 6 Plastic bags, 6 Pressure sensitive labels, 1 Student instruction sheet for copying.
