Investigating Spontaneous Generation

Recreate Pasteur’s classic experiment. Lab Kit for 40 students.

Can life arise from non-life? In 1864, noted French scientist Louis Pasteur dispelled this concept, termed "spontaneous generation," in one of science’s most famous experiments. Pasteur showed that microorganisms in a sterilized nutrient broth did not develop spontaneously.

Now your students can recreate Pasteur’s findings by comparing the growth of organisms that were exposed to particles in the atmosphere with those exposed to air but not particulate matter. In the process they gain firsthand insight into the fundamentals of evolution.

Key Scientific Concepts: Spontaneous generation - Anaerobes - Evolution. Cross-Curriculum Integration: Chemistry - Health.
