Students collect fallen leaves, stuff them into mesh bags and submerge them in a local stream to be colonized by the worms, snails, tiny crustaceans and insect larvae that inhabit naturally occurring leaf packs. In doing the Leaf Pack Experiments they learn to design, implement and analyze a scientific investigation while discovering the value of aquatic macroinvertebrates as living indicators of water quality and the overall health of a stream ecosystem.
The kit is totally reusable and flexible. Adaptable to varying time constraints, numbers of students, and grade levels, it is geographically friendly, and complete. All apparatus and guides necessary for collecting, sorting and identifying are included. (The full-color photo flashcards and waterproof sorting sheets are popular items on their own.)
Also included is a comprehensive Instructor’s Manual--a valuable reference guide with background material on stream ecology, a glossary, diagrammed instructions, experiment ideas, and field and lab data sheets.
